Introduction

The Academy Rifle Range is operated and maintained by the Naval Science Department. The range is normally open Monday-Thursday between the hours of 1520-1630. All Upper and Middle Division cadets, who have demonstrated their ability to safely handle a rifle and have passed a written Safety Examination, are welcome to participate in range activities.

The Academy and the NJROTC program follow the guidance of the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP). The CMP promotes firearms safety training and rifle practice for all qualified U.S. citizens with special emphasis on youth. The CMP operates through a network of affiliated shooting clubs and associations that covers every state in the U.S. The clubs and associations offer firearms safety training and marksmanship courses as well as the opportunity for continued practice and competition.

Cadets normally use the range to obtain National Rifle Association (NRA) certifications and/or as members of an Academy rifle team(s). Team members are Upper Division cadets who have demonstrated their exceptional marksmanship abilities. The teams compete in rifle postal matches with other NJROTC units throughout the school year. Due the competitive nature of the sport and to maintain their expertise, rifle team members are normally given priority when the range is open.

Range participants normally use either the Daisy 753 or 853 model .177 caliber pellet rifles. A limited number of Daisy pistols are available for team use. The use of personally owned pellet rifles is permitted on a case-by-case basis and must be coordinated with the Range Master- Chief Petty Officer Blasko. If permitted, personally owned rifles must be transported by the cadet's parent/guardian and hand delivered to the Range Master. Cadets are not permitted to transport any firearms. Personal firearms must be stored in the range until picked-up by the parent/guardian.
